Opening and closing the search bar
Any character keypress on a new tab page opens the search bar and places the character you typed directly into the input field. Celerity will not intercept keystrokes while a modal (settings, help, feedback, or confirmation) is open, or while the cursor is already inside a text input or editable element. Press Escape at any time to close the search bar and return to the shortcut grid. The settings, help, and feedback buttons in the top-right corner are hidden while the search bar is open. They reappear when you close it.
How Celerity resolves your input
When you press Enter, Celerity evaluates your input in a fixed priority order:1
Direct URL
If your input looks like a URL (e.g.
github.com or https://example.com), Celerity navigates there immediately. A missing https:// prefix is added automatically — you never need to type the protocol.2
Exact shortcut key
If your input exactly matches a shortcut key (e.g.
g), Celerity opens that shortcut’s site.3
Shortcut key + space + query
If your input is a shortcut key followed by a space and a query (e.g.
y lofi music), Celerity performs a site-specific search by substituting your query into that shortcut’s searchTemplate. The delimiter between the key and the query is always a single space.4
Google fallback
If none of the above match, Celerity sends your input to Google Search:
https://www.google.com/search?q={}.Live autocomplete suggestions
As you type, Celerity fetches up to 4 autocomplete suggestions and displays them below the input field. When you are typing a site-specific search (e.g.y lo), each suggestion is automatically prefixed with the shortcut key so selecting it triggers a site search rather than a web search.
Navigating suggestions
The available navigation keys depend on whether focus is on the text input or on a suggestion item. From the text input:

Example inputs
The table below shows common inputs and what Celerity does with each one.URL navigation
Type any bare domain or full URL and press Enter — Celerity recognises the pattern and navigates directly without treating it as a search. The URL regex matches hostnames with optional ports and paths:https:// is prepended automatically unless a protocol is already present. Any scheme is accepted (including ftp:// and chrome://), so custom browser URLs pass through unchanged.
